No sound! Help me pweeez (MDK 8.2)

Hey sup guys this is my first post, as I installed linux today. Anywho Im still getting aquainted and most works just fine.

However I am having a large problem getting the sound to work....

I am running mandrake 8.2, using the gnome mostly and some KDE. I have a ECS K7SEM sis 730 chipset, athlon cpu. It has onboard sis 718 sound i believe.

When I run harddrake, it loads fine, says i have that sound card, and when I try to configure the card, i do not hear the test sound. I can not hear any sounds at all or listen to mp3s or nothing! Bah!

When I try to open an mp3, I get the "couldnt open audio" error that states

"please check:
1 you have the correct output plugin selected
2 No other program is blocking the soundcard
3 Your sound card is configured properly"

and then nothing plays.

When I try to run audio mixer I get this error

"I was not able to open your audio device, please check that you have permission in /dev/mixer and make sure you have sound support in your kernel"

When I try to run Aumix, it doesnt do anything at all (?) as in it doesnt open....

My modules.conf looks like this

"alias usb-interface usb-ohci
alias sound-slot-0 snd_card_trident
above snd_card_trident snd-pcm-oss
probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
alias eth0 8139too"

pleeeeeez someone help me out! I dont wanna go back to windows! By the way my soudn works fine there. Im really diggin linux and would love my sound back thanks!\

As root in Konsole/Xterm
chmod 777 /dev/mixer
than as a regular user try open mixer.

Try to post your /etc/modules.conf. Further, login as root in a terminal (type 'su') and post the output you get when you type 'lsmod'.

Good luck, kamstrup
