No sound from CD player

gnome-cd plays the CD but no sound! (Red Hat 8)
Sound card is Ensoniq 5880 Audio PCI, module is es1371
I get test sound from "Sound Detection" tool; also Windows media Player under Win4Lin plays streaming audio (but Windows CD player thinks no CD is loaded)
Any help appreciated (Linux newbie)

Er - no, I don't have a cable :-) Only cable I have is from sound card to speakers
Is that a requirement? Windows CD player didn't need a cable between CD drive and sound card.

as far as I know anytime you want to play music cds you need that cable. Most computer stores have them for around 50 cents.

OK that works! many thanks for your help.
I'm still puzzled why I need that cable - wonder why the CD player doesn't read the data from the CD then send it to the sound card?

I think they originally designed sound to go directly from the cdrom to the sound card so its one less thing the processor has to worry about.
