No sound > device /dev/dsp can't be opened

Please help. I am a newbie and I am having issue with sound. I am using RH 8.0 and Sound Blaster Live value card. My motherboard A7A266 Alimagik . I have read other posts but it still does not work. Please be gentle, and if you can walk me though steps to get my sound working.

Here is the message I see:

Make sure that the module for your sound card is loaded, the permissions on /dev/dsp are set so users can access it and that the volume is not muted. You will find many threads with detailed instructions if you do a search of the forum for "sound".
