Esterling: I think you took the comment by Strike the wrong way.
He did not call anybody lazy. He said "if you are too lazy" to look up the thread, and then he graciously offered a link to save everybody (now or in the future when searching the archived threads) the trouble of searching further. And just because a distribution does something as default does not mean that it is correct. Back in days of olde, Sun used to ship Solaris with a default rhosts file of + + which meant anybody anywhere could rlogin to the account, and I think it was in fact the root account that had this file. So maybe, Mandrake will get their act together and improve security on the devices. Remember, security begins at home. |
Yeah, I didn't mean to offend anyone (this time ;)), was just trying to be nice :)
And Corin makes the exact same point that I would, so .. read his post :p |
try going to kde control center and switching back and forth between alsa and OSS. I also had to tweek the alsa config file a little before I got sound. I have to modprobe in snd-trident to get the alsa sound in. trident is OSS module, snd-trident is ALSA module.
OSS-<driver> ALSA snd-<driver> |
(cont)..You should have a bunch of aliases for sound in module.conf for different devices.

OK. My apologies for being snappy.
The universe got me back, though. After two days of audio perfection, I'm having sound troubles again. They're weirder, though. When I launch kde it gives me the /dev/dsp can't be opened error (twice, in fact), but I have no trouble listening to music on xmms. But wait! The volume control on xmms does absolutely nothing. Only my hardware volume control on the front of my laptop effects the volume. Xine, on the other hand, closes as soon as it launches because it says it doesn't have permission to use /dev/dsp. Mplayer works, IF I run it as root (and how scary is that? but I was desperate, it was a blockbuster dvd and I didn't want to return it before getting to watch!). If I try to use Mplayer as a user it just sends the audio to null, saying that there's no permission for /dev/dsp. I've got it set now so that /dev/dsp is owned by root.audio and that all the users over 500 (that would be me, my two teenage kids and my better half) have group membership in audio. My guess is that there is some non-human user which needs to be added to the audio group, too. Any thoughts? Oh, and yes, /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer (or rather their actual targets, since each of those are links to other files in my system) are 660. I did notice that the ln's are both lr-xr-xr-x. Maybe that's the prob? The lack of w in the permissions on the symbolic links? How the heck do you change permissions on a symbolic link, though? chmod just changes the permissions on the target... |
Is esd or artsd getting in the way?

Hi guys
I've got the same problem. Dell Optiplex GX 1 - PIII 450 Integrated sound adapter Crystal 4263 Mandrake Community 10 I've tried a number of sound cards but the symptoms are the same. I cannot get the sound to work. I've used the KDE control centre to no effect. Has someone managed to get it to work. Is it just the permissions on the device ? Chris |
Hi
I use Dell Optiplex GX1 PIII with integrated 4236 Crystal Ausio Mandrake 10 community : Open a terminal run sndconfig if its not there then return to the desktop select mandrake control centre/ install software specify sndconfig it will prompt for an install CD follow prompts to install sndconfig go back to terminal session run sndconfig it will update your modules.conf file Note that you might have to correct the permissions on /dev/sound and /dsp/audio Test the adapter from KDE configure / desktop / sound ***NOTE*** Under Mandrake 10 community: I found that I cannot use the embeded 4236 in Full duplex mode from KDE. In the end I had to rummage through a collection of PCI sound cards until I found one that worked. If you just want to play sound effects, CDs etc then the embeded 4236 will work fine. If you want to use Skype, etc then you need to install a PCI sound card with full duplex capability. Hope that helps a bit Chris |
