Please help no sound...ICH6 AC97 not working

Howdy guys,
I currently have installed Mandriva 2006 powerpack on my laptop;

Laptop Rig Benq -S53W-T01
-Intel 750 (dothan core)
-768 mb 533mhz DDR2
-Intel Centrino, 915GM (sonoma)
-Intel Wireless Pro 2200 B/G
-Realtek Lan
-Matshita 940s Super-Multi Drive

However i have been struggling to get sound. lspci reports my soundcard as:
82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family), i have selected snd_intel8x0 [ALSA]; and i have been unsuccessful in getting sound out.

I have played with ALSAMIXER, muting and unmusting everything and still no sound or peep.

I think this is a common problem however i am unable to locate a possible solution

I hjave looked at many forums and wiki pages that say fixing it with the new ALSA drivers work, however i struggle with my linux knowledge (newbie ere); and when i follow the wiki page i stumber you are suppose to identify the source or something...
Can someone please help me out with Mandriva 2006

Wink No sound? AC97

Hi, try using new driver from Alsa (final release)and compile to your Mandriva.
http://www.alsa-project.org/

Or maybe if you have PC try working out with Fedora 4 maybe 5.

You can have Mandriva and Fedora simultaneously (multi BOOT)in you PC if you know how and experiment wiht AC97 (I also working on this matter)

Dont hesitate to ask, ......

Regards,BOBY

snd-intel8x0

hi,

i have the same problem with 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family). i have read many forums about the same problem and i've found a solution at http://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/als...ew.php?id=1134. it's a pretty long thread but here's a short version:

download the latest alsa driver source from alsa's website:
http://www.alsa-project.org/

execute these commands as root.

extract the tarball
Code:
#tar -xzfv alsa-driver-version.tar.gz
go to the source directory
Code:
#cd alsa-driver-version
compile and install alsa with debug enabled
Code:
#./configure --with-cards=intel8x0 --with-sequencer=yes --with-debug=full
#make
#make install
then run alsaconf and raise the volumes with alsamixer. if you still don't have sound, enter this command as root

Code:
#echo 5c 0001 > /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/ac97#0-0+regs
i hope this helps. good luck.
