Unhappy no sound. at all.

Righto.

Im using mandrake linux 8.2, and so far this has been my only problem (I've only been using it on my home computer for a few weeks)..

When i installed linux, my sound card was detected, and its the right card - Yamaha YMF-xxxC (the exact model evades me). In any hardware manager it comes up as the same model, and I havent had any error messages regarding it.

However, when using anything that plays sound, theres no sound. This includes CDs, MP3s, games, startup noises etc. etc.

I have a sound monitor applet (the lighty thing you find on steroes) on my panel, and on startup that lights up to indicate that linux is actually playing my sound, but i dont hear anything. ive checked the equalisers and it isnt a problem with my speakers, and ive been through a few HOWTOs about it but still cant find the problem.

Any help would be great
