No sound after kernel upgrade

everything but apm was working fine on my box using the original 2.4.26 kernel that came with slack 10.1.

i went to kernel.org and down-getted the 2.4.30 source.
after successfully instsalling the new kernal (fixing my apm issue), I now have no sound...
When i try to play something i get
Code:
** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device
which of course does exist.

its been a while since ive played with any modules, but i tried doing the modprob \* , and depmod -a.... any other suggestions? did I do something wrong with the kernel? I built the config file for the kernel with make oldconfig, then edited it by hand.

This is a Dell Dimension 300 btw.
Code:
# lsmod

insted of using
Code:
make oldconfig
use
Code:
make menuconfig
or
Code:
make xconfig
did you do:
Code:
make modules_install
incase you are unsure how to compile a kernel here is a good webpage:
