No sound

I put together a bargain computer with the following motherboard:
biostar.com.tw/products/mainboard/board.php3?name=M7VIT%20Pro

I initally installed SuSE 8.2, but finally switched over to RH 8.0 after not getting my modem to work with SuSE (among many other problems).

My sound worked with SuSE (making no config modifications), but not working with RH.

Integrated audio (C-Media CMI9739A 6-Channel AC'97 CODEC
). Sound Card Detection test produces no sound.

Any suggestions?

i was just going to post this question, i've the same card integrated in my ASUS P4S8X motherboard and when i try to play some sound i get an error back that the sound device (either /dev/dsp or /dev/mixer or one of the like) can't be found/isn't responding (or whatever the message for that is, you know what i'm talking about). the kernel module for the card is cmpci, just so you know. you can do an lsmod to see if that module is running and if it's not check /lib/modules/<kernel number>/kernel/drivers/sound to make sure you don't have it before you recompile your kernel (if you do have it, it would be easy to insert it). anyway, looks like we both have the same problem and neither of us knows how to fix it. maybe YOU OUT THERE knows how to fix it, help us out. i'm on slackware 9.1, in case i didn't mention that (yeah, 9.1 came out last weekend and it is sweet). thanks

FirebirdV0273:

<<...to make sure you don't have it before you recompile your kernel ...>>

:p That's cute. I wouldn't begin to know how that is accomplished. I'm a naked little newbie who just wants to get away from Windows.

Thanks for the info, though. I'll go through your post tonight.

I did just find a Linux driver at the following link that I'm going to try later & see if it helps...just fyi:

Until we find a solution....

I don't have any experience with that card so here goes, What program gives the error saying /dev/dsp or /dev/mixer cannot be accessed, and what is the exact text, it may just be that the user cannont write to those devices, also are either of you using alsa drivers?

oh, i forgot to post that my problem is fixed. the driver that the other guy posted solved the problem for me, it's an oss driver by the way. i don't know if his problem is fixed though so maybe one of us can help him. while i'm at it, i get little pops when i try to play an mp3 in xmms. it sounds great when i play a cd, so i guess it's not the driver. although i have noticed the same thing in other places like flash animations on the web. so maybe it could be the driver. i'm maybe the reason that cd's sound good is that cable that goes from the back of my cd-rom drive to my card (i know that sounds really newbish and i'm way above that but i just don't know what to call that cable. lol) is a direct link that doesn't need any decoding like mp3's do. but i'm on a p4 at 2.5 Ghz so i don't know why decoding would cause inconsistencies in the sound output. maybe it's xmms. i don't know, any ideas guys?

FirebirdV0273,

It's an audio cable. (I had to look it up :) )

I put this aside for awhile to work on some other things.

Your original post:

cmpci was not found running

cmpci.o was found in:
/lib/modules/<kernel number>/kernel/drivers/sound but, I don't know how to add it to get it running :( I'm a newbie. If you could help me with that...I'd appreciate it.

Also, the driver that you got installed...I tried to do this, but was not successful. Could you also step me through the install?

Thanks,

nonruste

Doubtful

uniacid,

I doubt this string will be of much help. I never did get mine working. You may be better off creating a new post with all your specifics.
