Hi, im running slackware and have no sound coming out, upon boot i get this
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
my soundcard is an onboard pos, ive heard there is trouble getting them to work
You might have already done this, but make sure you have "modules.conf" (in /etc) setup properly ( as per the read me for your sound card; obtained when you down the ALSA driver ).
I don't know what "pos" is.
Is that a type of sound chip? If not, who makes the chip?
## "device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)" ##
Did you get this message before you installed ALSA?
In order to get help for this issue, you'll need to post more information.
Post the output from the following:
cat /proc/pci
lsmod
Phorem: I don't want to hijack this thread, but I would love to hear your opinion on the Athlon64 and how well it performs with Linux. Is your Mandrake install optimized for 64bit? Email me if you don't care
1. I laughed so loud i woke the wife up. S**T, what an idoit. "pos".....lololoololo
2. AMD64...well, here it goes:
I will try to cut the story short, but i think if i post it somewhere in these threads, some other linux 64bit newbie will want to read this.
I bought the Asus K8V and the AMD64 Athlon 3200 chip. After getting it all together, the computer wouldn't even boot. After some wire switching...off she goes.
Well, even after i got it to start up, I couldn't even install windows XP. Nothing would install. After changing the DDR voltage to 2.6 ( i have 2x512 3200 ) in the bios, XP installed fine. But still, no linux 64bit distro would install. Again, after making some adjustments in the bios and installing the latest beta BIOS Flash for my Asus mobo (K8V) i could get Suse 8.2-64 and Mandrake 9.2-64 to install.
From there it was fine. I should say sweeeeeet! It's much faster, but still, i had no real reference to compare it too. The agpgart module doesn't support the K8T800 chip set. It does support AMD64 agp on the core, but the North bridge still needs to be supported. In other words - i haven't yet had a chance to compare processing power to my old setup (AMD XP2000, 512 2700, 4xAGP, GeForce mx440 64meg) in Linux.
But.....(i'm sorry i have to do this)...after getting windows(i'm sorry) to install; i couldn't help myself. I installed all the drivers and **Savage!!!** I played a couple games and to say the least...it was UNREAL!!! (i played that too ut2003 :-)))
It was soooooooo solid!!!! Buttery Smooth!!!
I have a dual 2 gig at work to do cad on - needless to say, i play vids at lunch. UT2003 actually. And this dual 2 gig, wouldn't even stand a chance, even against a single AMD64 in 32bit mode. I'm not joking. It was solid. I was only getting 28 fps on the AMD64, but it seemed like there was no lag or visual distortion. I could move my mouse as fast as i wanted without the screen looking like it was falling behind (and i had the settings to MAX!!!! - everything!!). But as for the linux version of the game - i can play Savage on the Mandrake 32bit distro, but with no AGP. Which brought me to these fourms in the first place. I still can't get the K8T800 North bridge to work with the "agpgart".
"Phorem: I don't want to hijack this thread, but I would love to hear your opinion on the Athlon64 and how well it performs with Linux. Is your Mandrake install optimized for 64bit?"
In short - NO. Even when you are installing Mandrake 9.2 RC-1 64, and you go into the the individual packages and try and install another package by putting a check mark in the little box - it will CRASH! So you have to install the basic first, then install the rest later using the package manager ( basic, as in all of the GUI packages - but that's about it ).
So be warned. Let me try and figure out this mess first before you go waste your money ...... seeing how i already have :-))
Right on. Thanks for the info! I am getting excited! I just built my current box a few months ago. I was planning to start working on a 2.4c rig and give this setup to the wife (to get her OFF my box, lol) but then all the hype on the AMD64 and I decided to wait. I wasn't real thrilled about going with Intel anyway. Their business practices remind me somewhat of the boys at redmond. AMD is more *nix-like. I like to stay at least 1 step behind the current best to save like 50% on the initial purchase I mean, my 2500+ is running just about as fast as the 3200+ and I paid 75% less for it. I just wanted to see what it would be like to have a 1ghz FSB with an overclocked p4c.
Forget it now though, cause AMD has that stompin' 2.2ghz fsb WHOO HOOO!!!! I will however, hold out until the middle of next year or so. By then there will be a newer model, and some of the bugs should be worked out as far as pairing it with a linux distro. I'll have to keep an eye on how Slack and Gentoo do with it. I used Mandy for awhile, but grew real tired of it. Slack is where I need to be.
Enjoy that absolute bleeding edge hardware you got! And please, keep me posted on your progress if you don't mind
cat/proc/pci doesn't exist.... and ismod doesnt do anything, says it's an unknown command
i'm running slackware 9.1, using a hercules mule lt (cheapy little pci card, but it's soundblaster compatable, and it's big brother is supported by alsa, so it should work)
Module Size Used by Not tainted
soundcore 3332 0 (autoclean)
pcmcia_core 40032 0
ide-scsi 9424 0
sis900 13388 1
crc32 2880 0 [sis900]
agpgart 39576 0 (unused)
that's the output for lsmod
i tried going into /etc/rc.d/rc modules thingy and uncommenting the soundblaster pro and sb live modules my card is supposed to be SB compatable, thought it might work, but it didn't
All is well, i got my sound card working (the one i just bought) and even the onboard one....which i thought was the problem, but oh well, 4.1 is good anyway
here's the deal, see, i'm a complete (read, uber) noob, and didn't know you had to configure alsa...i typed alsaconfig after install just to see, but it was unknown
turns out, it's alsaconf...and i'm an idiot but oh well
once i configured it it worked like a charm (just had to activate soundblaster live module in module.conf file)
No you're aren't an idiot. Sh*t!! I should have told you that from the start. My bad.
And the winex thing.....no probs. Install using the rpm and the command "rpm -ivh winex(whatever it's called).rpm"
Some stuff just won't run right in wine / winex, but when u install or run programs with wine, don't double click it (this is what i found) use the command line while in the X-server and it should look like "winex3 setup.exe" and so on. This has ALWAYS worked for me (here we go again :-))
