No power to breakout box, no sound from card

Thanks for reading.

Summary:
New sound card- no sound, no power, possibly records, module was loaded.

Intro:

Hi. I just put in a pci e-mu 1820 sound card and external breakout box. The card is recognized, and I think the emu-10k1 module is loaded during boot. The card shows up (as Audigy- Creative Labs) when I open Kmix, Mepis OS Center, and KDE Hardware information. (I know I should know the appropriate files, but I'm weary of 6 months of newbie text adventure right now).

Problems:

1. No lights or power seem to come on in the breakout box, even though I connected the power cable on the card to what I'm pretty sure is the extra power cable from the main power supply (tightly) inside my case. The card is definitely in, and the joints are tight. I have another cable connecting the card and the breakout box.

2. I can't hear anything. Breakout box to receiver connection is fine.

Snoop Work:

I tried to see if I could record something, even though I couldn't hear anything. I opened a track in audacity, and something was recorded, but it wasn't coming from the inputs in the breakout box. When I reloaded my onboard sound card (which was originally disabled in the BIOS) and listened to the recording, it was of an mp.3 that I had had playing in Rhythmbox while Audacity had been recording earlier. There were 2 tracks, each recorded a bit of time apart from each other. The first track played at normal speed. The second played at greatly reduced speed. So somebody somewhere was playing music in my computer, but they wouldn't let me hear it, and they slowed down.

I've attached the outputs from 4 commands that normally seem to be relevant in such threads:
dmesg | grep IRQ
dmesg | grep irq
cat /proc/interrupts and...
lspci

Foots:

*Hoorah for MEPIS, 'cause it let me relax a little. I hope it stays nice.
**Any advice on whether Audacity and Hydrogen are a good combination for simple music creation? I know I like Audacity. Hydrogen hasn't been that stable. Anything better right now? I used to use Hammerhead.

Thanks for reading.

which sound system are u using? ALSA?

please look for your soundcard with
$ lsmod

this lists all modules currently loaded
if you find a module for your soundcard in the net you may load this
with
$ modprobe [modulename]

the new audigy cards do not run on emu1k10. Take a trip over to http://www.alsa-project.org/ and download teh latest version for your card.

Yes, I'm using ALSA.
Thanks struberg, lsmod is attached.
I think I will go to the alsaproject to find the non e-mu10k1 module. Thanks otchie1.

(I just did) I don't see a module for my e-mu 1820. Should I get one for an Audigy model? It's confusing, because I know that the Audigys and the e-mu series are related (e-mu being the higher end I believe), and that the e-mu shows up as Audigy in Kmix, etc., but I don't know if they should be using the same module or not.

I would. Newer Audigy carsd will not work with the old SBLive driver...you will need the new module if it is a new series Audigy card.

Just a follow-up.

I went to the alsa site, and all that they have are emu10k1 and emu10kx, neither of which seem to work with the E-mu 1820, which is not an Audigy card, although several programs seemed to think this. I was a bit rash to assume that the emu would be supported, I guess. After seeing this, I decided to change cards. I've exchanged the card and breakout box for an M-audio Delta 1010 card and breakoutbox (which seems much nicer anyway). It generally works, but I've got a few errors. I started a new thread with subject heading "Delta 1010 soundcard seems a hair away from functional", if you're interested, or would like to help some more.
Thanks for helping me.

p.s.- I don't know how to forward someone to another post, which obviously would have been helpful here. If anyone could tell me whether and how, I'd appreciate it.

If you mean you want to include a link to another post, you could just cut and paste the URL into your reply. If you mean you want to forward the contents of a post to someone else, you would need to send that other person an Email. If the LQ member has enabled the Email option, then along the bottom line of that member's post you will see a small button labelled "Email". Click on that and away you go. I hope that answers your question, if not please let me know and I'll elaborate. -- J.W.

You're welcome. Actually what I should have said is that if you want to make a URL a clickable link, then you can just add the appropriate URL tags around it. For example, if you wanted to link to Google what you would actually enter is:
Code:
   [ url = www . google . com ] Google [ / url ]
Just remove *all* the spaces in the above, and that will make it clickable. Give it a try next time you need to include a link -- J.W.
