No output on monitor

I use Ubuntu 18.10 but have also experienced the same problem with Mint 19.1.

I want to use dual monitors but I've had difficulty getting my second monitor to work.

It turns out my second monitor doesn't work even if I use it as my primary monitor. As soon as POST finishes and Linux starts to boot the screen goes blank. BIOS etc is fine.

Its an old 17" VGA Acer that I have connected to my graphics card using a passive DVI-I - VGA adapter.

I've read lots about how passive adapters might not work and an active is needed but if I boot into Windows everything works fine. I can use dual monitors without any hiccups at all.

So, is it going to be possible to get my second monitor working in Linux?

Thank you!

I was able to get that kind of setup working, but my adapter was an active adapter and part of a USB docking station. That might be the difference.

Please check the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log for errors. Post the file here for help.

Thank you for your replies.

I've made hidden files visible and gone to var/log but there isn't a file or folder named "xorg".

EDIT: I should add that Ubuntu recognises it and seems to indicates it's "on". In settings I get all the usual options (join screens, mirror etc) and my mouse will disappear off the right side of my primary screen.

I've sorted it!

I have just removed my RAID 1 drives so went into BIOS to turn RAID off and noticed a setting that allows me to use my onboard graphics and my graphics card at the same time. I now have the VGA monitor plugged into my motherboard, my primary HDMI monitor plugged into my graphics card and "hey presto"!

I've been trying to get this to work for at least a month! :-|

Both my monitors are plugged into discrete graphic processor unit. No solution found, only a workaround being to switch between virtual terminals until it powers on

$ while true; do printf '%b' "Changing VT..."; sudo chvt $(($RANDOM % 64)); read; printf '%b' "Changing VT..."; sudo chvt 2; read; done

You realize, I hope, that you are hijacking a thread that has been closed for 3 1/2 years.

Please post your own new thread with your own hardware and software details so you may receive proper support.
