Technically challenged Linux newbie

System is P-4 1.6Mhz with 512Mb memory. Kernel 2.6.15
Problem exits on many different Linux distros.

Both devices show up in in Kmixer and /proc/asound/devices

cat /proc/asound/devices

The MSI motherboard apparently sets the sound card as the first device. Without the sound card installed and the onboard sound device disabled in the BIOS, the USB headset works fine.

How do I reset the USB device as the first device to be recognized? Or how do I disable the sound card without physically uninstalling?

My fall back is to make an old clunker my 'music box' and use the headset on my primary machine.
