No Networking on Redhat 9.0!!! ; unable to initialize NIC cards
Hello,
Just wanted to check if anybody besides me has a lot of trouble installing NIC cards on Redhat 9.0 2.4 kernel. I have a very recent computer ASUS P4C800 with on board 3com lan, that one of course does not initialize/ activate in the system. I have also tried disabling that one and using one of my good old 3C-905C cards, no luck. I also tried using Intel Etherxpress E100 card, that usually is the easiest to install and still nothing.
This is really bad, it sucks all fun of using Linux (no network) , I have tried installing Manufacturers drivers, for both 3Com and iNtel NIC cards and still nothing.
Does anybody had similar problems? if so what have you done to resolve this? Does this sound like a common problem?
I would suggest you try to give some more details, like jarib said, about what the exact problem is. But I just got over a network problem so I'll tell you what I did - I don't know if this is your problem but sounds like it might be.
Basically, if you use a cable modem, and you're trying to use a different network card than you've been using (that works) on your cable modem, you have to reset the cable modem after plugging it into the new card by unplugging the cable modem for a few seconds. Apparently cable modems lock onto your MAC address and only work with that one, until you reset it.
Please post the errors you get during network initialization. Your problem is in your installation, not in the hardware.
Try "ifup eth0" to initialize eth0 and post the errors.
Check if the modules for the devices are present in the modules directory.
modprobe the module if it is not loaded.
Check for alias XXX eth0 in /etc/modules.conf
grep for eth0 on dmesg output.
