no hard drive detected .. RHE3 install on a dell m70 laptop

Hello

I currently have red hat 9 installed and working on this laptop, but we are upgrading to red hat enterprise 3 and I am having issues trying to re-image it. I am using the internal cd/dvd rom drive to boot from cd with the rhe3 install disks and before the install begins it says "no hard drive detected". We haven't done any modifications to these laptops and I am confused that red hat 9 sees them but not rhe3.

Any input would be appreciated, I'm no expert on hardware so I might just be missing something simple.

Thanks for any help.

i'm going to take a wild guess because I know nothing of RHLE3, but, usually when you boot from a linux install CD you can pass the kernel parameters at boot and I would try researching the boot params for that distro and see if any of them would be helpful for detecting your drives.

For example...

With the Gentoo Live CD or Install CD I pass 'gentoo doscsi' so it picks up my serial ata hard drive in my laptop.

So, do these laptops have serial-ata drives? If they do, that could be the problem and the fix would be to pass a kernel boot parameter to load drives for scsi support.

One way of determining if that drives are SATA is to see what device linux asigns to the drives... /dev/hda would be IDE based where-as /dev/sda would be SCSI or SATA.
