no functional modem in suse 10

i am running Suse 10.0 and trying to get online using dial up. i installed the modem packages with yast and got no arguments for dependencies or anything so i assume all is well with the install. below is the error i get when i try to dial, i can't even hear the modem initialize. also i did lspci -v to check the modem status, although i installed it the "subsystem unknown" throws me off. Has anyone had a similar issue with a fix, i tried several small things for configureing such as stupid mode and what not like other posts said but no go.

log after trying to dial in....

SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.59 on linux.
Status is: disconnected

You have a winmodem, where most of the processing is offloaded to the software, as opposed to a normal "hard modem", where the modem hardware does most of the processing and the generic Linux serial drivers work with it. Now, there *is* a Linux driver for that model, but it's a real pain to use (I know from experience - I bought one of these modems, but returned it because of the annoying drivers and because it would disconnect me for no reason every 5 minutes). I'd recommend just finding a different modem. Make sure it isn't a windmodem too. Actually, you should check the hardware compatibility list on this site first.
