Unhappy No DVD-Burner under MDK 10.1CE

Hi all,

I have just installed Mandrake 10.1 Community from a Linux Format DVD cover disc. As with all previous versions back to 9.0, everything works fine, except my LG GSA-4040B DVD-Burner. I have a slightly unusual hardware setup as listed below:

Gigabyte GA-7VT600 1394 Motherboard
AMD 2400XP
768MB RAM
LG GSA-4040B DVD-RAM on IDE1:1
CW099D CD-RW on IDE1:2
ST360021A 60GB HDD on IDE2:1
WD1200BB 120GB HDD on IDE2:2

SATA is disabled in BIOS. Mandrake boots and installs off DVD.

Mandrake boots normally, CDROM and CDROM2 are both symlinks to /dev/hdb

There is NO /dev/hda (where I would expect it)

There is also NO /dev/scd*

This of course is almost certainly due to having two optical drives only on the first IDE cable. The BIOS and windows do not seem to have a problem with this configuration, but Linux SURE DOES!!!

I am of the opinion that my WinXP install will go belly up and no longer boot, all my drive letter will change, and my system will be unusable if I swap IDE cable 1 with IDE cable 2. Could someone please let me know if this is the case.

Any and all help appreciated.

Google up a copy of Karneevor's Linux HOWTO. The situation you have is much like the one described in the HOWTO. The main part of the fix seems to be: 1) enable scsi emulation, 2) edit the kernel line of the bootloader config to tell the system which drives to enable. Then edit a couple of other files and try it out.
I had trouble getting my LiteON Combo drive to work. This HOWTO helped a lot.

Wink Not Quite...

Thanks bigrigdriver,

but I think you missed the meat of the story.

I don't have a device in /dev for the missing DVD-Burner (LG GSA-4040B)

Not one...

no hda,

no sr0

no scd0

no XXX0

nothing.

It appears as normal in the BIOS screen at startup, but that is the last time you see it under Mandrake 10.1CE.

I am also using LILO, but I guess I can change this. I seem to recall that the scsi-emulation is not required in LILO with the 2.6 kernel or above.

I cannot use GRUB because the only method I know for dual booting MDK with WinXP involves LILO and dd'ing the boot sector to C:\bootsect.lnx and using NTLDR as my boot manager. This is obviously not the best way to do things, but I have destroyed my WinXP install more than once before with GRUB, so figured it was 'better the devil you know'.

Any ideas welcome, especially feedback on swapping IDE 1 with IDE 2 to put the two optical discs on the 2nd IDE channel without killing EITHER installed OS. I also have 2 partitions on each HDD. I do not wish to kill my WinXP install!

Cheers,

dmesg output

OK,

I managed to find this message in /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/message , important line with asterix:

VP_IDE: VIA vt8237 (rev 00) IDE UDMA133 controller on pci0000:00:0f.0
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xd800-0xd807, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:DMA
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xd808-0xd80f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA
Probing IDE interface ide0...

*** ide0: Wait for ready failed before probe ! ***

hdb: CW099D ATAPI CD-R/RW, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
Using anticipatory io scheduler
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
Probing IDE interface ide1...
hdc: ST360021A, ATA DISK drive
hdd: WDC WD1200BB-00GUA0, ATA DISK drive
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15

This may be a problem with LG drives as documented before, but burners were not effected by that bug.

Any help anyone??

Talking Problem Solved

OK, it was the BIOS.

Booting from backup BIOS made it work, and work well...

Now if only I could get my NT1-Plus II USB ISDN modem working :-)
