no dial tone message
HI all,
I have an IBM T20 laptop that comes with a winmodem. I have a pcmcia Xircom creditcard modem/NIC that I will use instead so I don't have to fool with the winmodem drivers. I'm using the Debian distro, installed from knoppix's knx-hdinstall tool. Note: this problem happens in all the other distros I've tried too. In kppp, I setup the account and the ISP's number and have it autodetect the DNS. Also, when I query the modem I get responses. Then, when I click connect, I can hear my speakers kicking out some blank sound, but then it dies out and the screen says No Dial Tone. I've run a search in these boards and have found some 'no dial tone' issues, but none that I found described this problem. Any ideas? |
Is the phone line plugged into the modem and does it have a dial tone if you hook up a handset to it?

Yes to both questions. I have DSL, but only in one room and so I use the phone line when not in that room. I have the DSL line filter on the jack too. Also, I have Win2k loaded on this computer too, and I'm able to connect using that line, however I connect using the winmodem when using Win2k.
