No default libao driver available.

Using archliux .4 with emu10k1.
I added "alias sound emu10k1" to modules.conf and "modprobe emu10k1" to rc.local.
When I boot and lsmod the driver is loaded. If I try to play an mp3 using mpg321 I get the error found in the subject.
If I switch to root, I play without errors.

Your help is appreciated.
