no boot with sata dvd drive connected
My new #linux #computer will not boot if a sata #DVD_drive is attached.
It will get as far as the bios screen asking for f2 or delete keys to be pressed. Doing so has no affect.
I have tried two different DVD drives, two different sata cables, and two nearly identical computers and
the result is the same. Computer boots and runs fine with the DVD drive removed.
I would appreciate any help with this issue.

The failure to boot and also to not respond to F2 or delete, which Asus uses to get into bios is puzzling, but could be due to hardware incompatibility that bios does not recognize. This obviously points to something incompatible with the drive, but is seldom seen stopping at the bios splash screen level like you have.
I have DVD/BluRay RW drives in my machines and not a problem with them so it is really puzzling.
This leads me to the next question. How new (or old) is the DVD drive? How current is the bios on the board? What does the board documentation say about devices supported?
Maybe you could give use a little more info, like make and model of the dvd drive, and bios level on the mobo.
Do you by chance have an M.2 drive in that machine? My Asus board has 2 M.2 connections like yours, but one of those shares the PCI channels with 2 of the SATA ports so it is an either-or situation where I can use 1 M.2 slot or 2 SATA ports, but not both at the same time. The manual for your board says "When the M.2_1 Socket 3 is operating in SATA or PCIE mode, SATA6G_5/6 ports will be disabled." which is similar to mine.
Possibly try a different SATA port for the DVD.

Can you get to bios after full power off? Is this a Windows 10 hibernate deal? Something like fast boot in bios too.

The date on the DVD drive is 2013 made by ASUS. Nothing fancy, just an internal drive with modern type connector accomodations. I have two of them and both won't work on two similar computers.
The boards are very new. A few months old. The board documentation shows a picture of a similar drive and indicates "purchase separately".
There is no M.2 drive. I tried sata ports 2 and 3.
Thank you for your help. I am going to purchase an external USB DVD drive and see if that works. It would be all I need, if it does work. Thanks again.

I can get to bios if the DVD drive is removed. Computer runs normally then.
Has nothing to do with Win 10.
I will purchase an external DVD drive and hope for the best.
Thank you for your reply.

I'm going to assume the DVD drives are old and worn out. Marking it solved.

A couple of things to try:
1-
Windows Fast Boot (on by default in Win-10) locks the boot drive when you shut down Windows. Try turning Fast Boot off before shutting down and I think MX will be able to see the drive.
2-
It has been fixed by changing a Sata setting to AHCI. Then the disk was recognized. MX installer did find the disk too, and was able to install. When done, windows was part of the bootloader. All fixed.
