ok when booting up etho says failed.
when i do ifconfig i get an ip address and a mask it says up loopback running. when i do /etc/sysconfig/hwconf as root it says perm denied. when i do a /sbin/lspci it has a listing for the broadcom ethernet card i have it reads like 2:01.0 ethernet card and so on. my kernel is 2.4 20-8.
every time i try to get on the internet using red hat 9 it says webpage could not be found. unknown host. I just want to get on the net. i used mozilla, konqueror nothing works. in windows you would probaly hit detect network settings what would be the equalivent in linux red hat 9. I dont have any ideas. any help would be appreciated.
if ipv6 is in use, and using a router,
we may need to merge several discussion threads in this forum.
ipv6 appears to confuse some routers - linksys/siemens.
I typed vi /etc/sysconfig/hwconf. and it had nothing of a ethernet card. How do i hardware detect or load drivers. i also did #dmesg|grep eth and nothing came up. i did a lspci -v and it came up with like 4 pages of stuff. didnt really know what i was looking for. i used the script command to put about 4 or 5 commands in a file. but i couldnt post the info cause i am not connected on the web which goes back to the orginal problem. I have an external hardrive but i dont know how to hook that up to linux either. but i am all ears for a hardware detect load some drivers. i just dont know how. i did download the drivers for the broadcom ethernet card for linux so dont know whats next but i aint giving up. I had no problem with redhat 7. it automatically detected everything i was good. but not with rh9. i will await your reply.
thanks
disable Kudzu? I never used RH 9.0 much, but in RHEL Kudzu was giving me ethernet problems. Mostly cuz it messes up the auto-detect line speed when it scans the card. Is your eth0 link up? are you using DHCP or static IP? can you ping or do you get "destination unreachable"?
that was great info. i really appreciate it. I just dont have a floppy drive. But if you could tell me how to burn it to cd then that i could do. if this were windows i would use nero. i dont the counterpart in linux. nor how to use it. but i could figure it out. just need to get it and install it. were would i go to disable kudzu. I read that a couple times in other places on this site.where do i go to disable kudzu or whats the command from the command line. thanks

Please clarify the problem ..
did this eth0 EVER work .. or is it an install problem ?
If it's an install problem .. disable PNP settings in the bios before you go on a rampage with the software :-)
Reboot and things should work fine. RH really is not acting as a PNP OS and a lot of devices fail installation.
If it used to work .. then I think one should consider bad hardware .. pci based ethernet cards are < $10 .. and if no maintenance activity or addiiton of hardware/software can be blamed .. replace the card before redoing the os ..
To disable Kudzu, edit the system services. It's in the RH Menu -> System Settings -> Services. It's next to the SAMBA and NFS server settings. Uncheck the Kudzu box, then save, then edit the other run levels (3, 4, and 5) the same way, then reboot. It should work after that.
disabled kudzu still didnt work. did this every work not ever in red hat. I have a dual boot laptop. win xp and red hat9. i dont believe the ethernet card is bad because it works in windows. as far as pnp settings you will have to clarify what to do in the bios. i dont know. well i am still here any ideas.
i just installed suse 9.0 and everything worked fine. dont know what was going on with redhat 9 but i will go back and figure it out in the mean time suse works fine. and i am good. wont give up on rh.
