Nforce2 Audio and Gentoo

I have all my modules loaded and I can't seem to get my sound working. When I run XMMS it says "Couldn't open sound".
Here is a list of modules.

greg@desktop ~$ lsmod
Module Size Used by Tainted: P
nvidia 1631392 11 (autoclean)
nvaudio 36820 0
ac97_codec 13428 0 [nvaudio]
nvnet 26368 1

Everything else is compiled into my kernel, I don't like to use modules normally, but for testing purposes I'm using them for my sound.

Here is my current system information:

MSI Delta-L Mainboard
AMD AthlonXP 2400+
512 PC2400 DDR
MSI GeForce4 MX440
Hauppauge TV Card

Everything else isn't important.

It seems all the articles i've read says that if you can get your modules to load you should have sound. I tried to use lsof /dev/sound/dsp and nothing was using it.<br>

Here is some output from dmesg:

Nvidia + AC97 Audio, version 0.24, 12:55:00 Oct 14 2003

generally, the nvaudio driver is awful, and seldom works. the best option is to use the ALSA snd-intel8x0 driver, much better
