Unhappy Nforce Problems, I think

ok here i go,
i have a nvidia based mobo, k7420 i think. onboard geforce2 mx video, onboard nvidia sound, etc.

now my problem is installing any type of red hat linux. I have tried installing 7.1, 7.3 and 8.0.

7.1 and 7.3 just lock up after everything is installed, but before it reboots. that's about all i can say there, cuz i have no clue what's goin on.

now with 8.0, i've tried to install it several times on a 15 gig western digital hd. i get through all the setup questions and such, then it goes, "copying image to harddrive" or something like that. It gets to 24% then gives me an error message saying i need a larger harddrive.
and i can't do anything else after that happens.

btw, i have to go into linux text installation mode, because if i go into the graphical mode, right after i choose which mode i want to go into, the screen goes black, and nothing happens, no harddrive or cd-rom activity.

i also have mandrake 8.3 and it installs fine, and everything works, cept i have to install the sound and lan drivers for my mobo.

other than that i can't think of anything else, so if anyone can shed some light on this issue, it will be greatly appreciated. as i am finally taking a linux/unix class at my college

thanks

I had a similiar problem as well.

I did not confirm this but is the HD set to CS. Try pining the HD to master and see what happens from there. Even though RH8.0 has supposedly fixed that problem.

thanks for the reply

i had the harddrive as slave, so i changed it to master, then i started over and reinstalled red hat 7.3. well, it still didn't work, but instead of locking up at 1/3 or so of the way through the post configuration part, it locked up 2/3 of the way through. lol

maybe red hat is just not for me.

The nforce boards require the installation of the nvidia drivers before they work correctly, try installing in text mode and then installing the nforce drivers before setting up XFree86.
