NF7-S + Sata .... extremely slow speed...

My harddisk is Seagate 7200rpm,80G Sata.
Cpu: amd 3200+
1G ram ddr400
Motherboard: NF7-S

RLee:/home/lee # hdparm -t /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 42 MB in 3.04 seconds = 13.81 MB/sec

Too slow. Copy small(<400MB) files is ok, if bigger , the speed will slow down. Copy 2.4G files from partition to partition , in windows xp cost 140 seconds, but in SuSE(Mandriva 2006 also) 10.0 it cost 270 seconds.
If the file is more bigger , more time will cost. When I copy files from windows partition to suse partition , 7.4G files , cost me more than 20 minutes. And when copying , sometimes computer won't response me, like right click on desktop , no menu ,looks like computer is dead, after 5~10 seconds , the menu comes out......just like playing DVD in DVD-ROM without DMA.

RLee:/home/lee # hdparm -d1 /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

RLee:/home/lee # hdparm -i /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

How can I solve this problem?
Regards from China.

Seagate SATA hard drives are poor in Linux because of the Silicon Image controller. Also other controllers like the Promise controllers have the same problem. I suggest Hitachi's T7K250 if you want a much faster hard drive. Seagate drives are poor performers for OS drives.

If you still want to use the Seagate SATA hard drive, search this forum on a special way how to enable DMA.
