new Xeon: Why? ... -vs- Core 2 Duo

This is either A) Intel marketing 101, B) a "why __X__ type of mother board is better" question, or C) a cost-performance analysis question.

Is the only difference between Xeon (5100 series) and Core 2 Duo the following?
  • Xeon's front side bus is faster for a given processor clock speed
... are there other differences / reasons to chose Xeon, for example socket type, or perhaps some rarely-advertised statistic? From the description of the 3000-series Xeon at Wikipedia's Xeon page, one wonders if it's all just marketing anyway--the "Xeon" name..

The application scientific number crunching. Basically, matrix after matrix seasoned with prolific FFTs. We think we're reaching the 32-bit memory address limitation, so we'd like to use a 64 bit kernel, perhaps utilizing MPI subroutines.

The hardware In times past, the sole bottleneck has been processor, so it's cost effective to buy Dell. Any advice in the realm of 64-bit MPI usage is warmly welcomed

One more thing: Xeon's aren't listed on the Toms Hardware CPU charts. (Unless I'm blind.) Why not compare Xeons along with the rest?
