bod,
that doesn't print anything, either.
And no, libv41 is still not in my lib directory.

The technique I posted didn't work, but that might just be my system. It may require tweaking which is above my pay grade. Seems to have worked for others, though.
I'm going to go buy a better webcam. There's a local store that sells Logitech and they have three webcams which all appear on beachboy2's list
here. Thanks for that - good resource to have!
I'll let you all know how that works out. I won't be marking this thread as solved, though.
Anyhow, thanks to everybody who commented. Your cheques are in the mail.

That's good: if modprobe does not print anything, it means that the driver is loaded successfully now. It would print something if there was an error.

That's strange. dpkg -L libv4l-0:amd64|grep convert should print the actual location.

I got my refund today and tried to buy the Logitech c310, but they were all out. So I settled for the c270. The resolution is too low and the pictures are too small, but it worked on Skype and Cheese right out of the box with no drivers to install. It was only a few dollars more than the other cam I bought.
If this thread has a solution it is surely this: if there is no cd in the box, the webcam will probably work.

Thanks again to everyone.
Toodles!
