New video card and monitor - any steps before I install?
Hi folks,
Well, I'm finally upgrading my old ATI Radeon 7200 (64 mg) to an ATI Radeon 9550 (256mb) and the monitor from an old Scepter 15" to a Princeton Graphics 17" flat panel display. Both new pieces of hardware have DVI.
Every thing works well now. Anything I should set up for before installing the new stuff? Changes in the XFree script or whatever?
System is a P4 with a gig of memory, Mandrake 10.0, all SCSI.
Thanks,
Stunter

If your using the same driver for the video card that should be fine. If not, then you'll have to install the new driver either before swapping it in, or change to booting into console, and then install it. ( I'd do this anyway just in case you have to put the driver in again, are alter settings in fglrx etc. ).
The monitor will need to be adjusted in XF86Config-4 If it uses diffrent frequencies than your old monitor: HorizSync and VertRefresh is usually what needs to be changed. ( diffrent size or type ).

Thanks,
That's much what I figured. I have an older version of fglrx running, so the new card will (I hope) accept that...at least until I can get X up and running, then I can upgrade. Hopefully the manual for the monitor will have the H-sync and V-sync stuff, but I imagine the new monitor can handle the sync rates from the older one.
After all the work I had to do to get the old card working with OpenGL and such, I am hoping it's easier with the new card.
Cheers,
Stunter
