Angry New User can't get ethernet board working!!!

I have just installed Red Hat 8.0, I am a new user to Linux and currently no nothing!!

I have a Surecom EP-320x-si NIC that I can't get Linux to configure.

I have downloaded the drivers from the Web, it is called ep320xs.tar, but I haven't a clue what to do with it!! I currently have placed it on to a floppy.

I have tried to follow some procedures that others have posted for similiar problems but to no avail.

Could someone please give me some step by step instructions.

Thanks

Is it actually a model EP-320x-s1 s1 instead of si?

Anyway, I find the s1 model on their site. Also, a quick google search reveals a bit of info:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...TF-8%26hl%3Den

According to this it uses the tulip driver wich is for DEC/Digital Equipment ethernet chipsets and is used in a lot of cards. You might try "modprobe tulip" and "lsmod" to see if the module is loaded. "dmesg" to view new messages at the end as well.

If you're still having no luck, do as the person in this Google/Usenet posting did. Do "lspci -vv" and post the results specific to this card back here. RedHat 8.0 uses kernel 2.4.18 and according to one persons response to this usenet posting, this card has been supported in the kernel since 2.4.5 without having to load additional drivers.

Ok, I found the readme file that came with the driver, and it tells me to configure the kernel.

I used menuconfig and enabled the option "Myson MTD-8xx PCI ethernet support"

I followed the instructions, and now it sort of works.

I am using a cable modem for the WEB, which uses DHCP for the ip@.

I don't get an ip@ untill, i use the dhclient eth0 command.

Once i do this, i get a ip@.

However, once I have done this, I can no longer launch any programs, so I must make sure my web browser is open before I use this command.

Now, my machine also won't re-boot, I have to fully shutdown and switch back on again, I can't use restart.

Any ideas?
