New to Linux - SuSe Resolution Problems

I am new to Linux, and thus very naive. I am slowly picking up the feel of SuSe 9.2 Pro and am feeling good about it, but I have a serious problem.

I have a Abit Siluro GeForce4 Ti4200 video card, and a 910T Black Samsung LCD monitor. The monitor's natural resolution is 1280x1024, but for some reason the highest resolution I can select is 1024x768. I have been to the NVidia website, and they told me to use YOU (YaST Online Update) to update my video drivers. I have done that, and know that it worked because 3D acceleration is now enabled.

Fortunately, my monitor works under this resolution, but some text seems a bit fuzzy. I've been through everything to try to get the resolution up, but I can't do it. I went into some advanced setup things, and it identifies all my hardware correctly, and even identifies that it should be run in 1280x1024. But when I click "test" it tests in 1024x768.

WHAT DO I DO?? So frustrating...

The SaX2 tool is designed to allow you to modify your video settings. To launch it, go to System > Configuration > SaX2 then choose the resolution option to make changes. Alternatively, you can manually edit the XF86Config file (in the /etc/X11 directory) to add the desired resolution. This is a fairly common topic, and there are a number of existing threads on it in the forums. In any case, good luck with it and welcome to LQ! -- J.W.

I've done that. I've been to the configuration settings in SaX2. Everything in the XF86Config also has 1280x1024 listed. EVERYTHING I HAVE SEEN INDICATES THAT 1280x1024 SHOULD BE ONE OF MY OPTIONS. But when I test my new settings in SaX2, it loads in 1024x768. And 1024x768 is the highest option when I right click the desktop and try to configure the video from there.

I really don't understand. Is something not installed correctly? Anyone had this problem before? HELP.

Shouting isn't necessary. Perhaps it would be helpful if you posted your current XF86Config file. -- J.W.
