New RAM card no-go by itself - what gives?

Not exactly a linux question, but here's people who can probably give a no-bullshit reply or point me to one:

I have 256Mb RAM, and installed an additional 512Mb on a second card... this has had a marked effect on my whole system speed - it is now blindingly fast at 2.4GHz and CPU resources are wildly underused. I have been pleased... however:

I would have liked to used the 256Mb card in another machine (with a mere 8Mb). I have discovered, though, that the BIOS will only recognise the RAM (all of it) if the 256Mb card is in place. Remove that card and it freezes at the memory check stage.

What is going on - are there two types of card (say a master and a slave) and the master must be present. I've been hunting for an answer - but I'm asking the wrong questions.

(Turns out the card won't fit my other machine anyway... but I'd still lke to know.)

Install the 512 in the slot vacated by the old memory.

I'd reckon it was a timing issue. Maybe with the old memory in, it's able to satisfy the timing on the bus.
Probably all the memory runs at that (lower) speed with it in place.

Merely hypothesising, have no real idea.

Interesting idea - the new card is 400MHz, the older is probably something like 333MHz (which seems common for these cards but I'll actualy have to go look to know for sure.)

I can't remember if BIOS has configurable RAM speed ... but there's supposed to be SDP chip on board to auto-update the bios. Should that not take care of such issues?
