New PSU makes strange sound, coil whine?

I got a brand new PSU and it's working great so far. However I noticed that after an hour of use it started making a weird noise, very similar to a mechanical HDD that's working except louder. Initially I thought it was its fan, after looking the issue up better I was introduced to coil whine which seems to be more accurate to what I'm hearing.

Took this 10 second recording of the sound with my headphone mic: Please give it a listen and let me know if it sounds like coil whine to you. Is that normal and safe?

I noticed it occurs while the computer is idle: If I start a Blender render to solicit the CPU, that creaking goes away until the render finishes. That's particularly odd as you'd expect it to do such things under load.

Post the make and model of the psu. Is the item returnable? If so I would return it. The whining noise may be a portent of bad things to come or it may just be an ongoing annoyance which will eventually drive you crazy.
By the way, listened to your link and I can't really hear much. Psu coil whine is usually higher pitched and at max volume on your link all I could hear was a low pitched hum which may have been due to having my volume all the way up trying to hear something.

Don't see what else this noise could be, either coil whine or a fan issue. They say it might stop after a few days, of course I don't have a guarantee that's going to happen. I believe I have a two week return period so I might just put the old one back in and consider asking for a new one or the money back.

All I hear is white noise, sorry.
Apart from that most aspects sound very much like something I experienced with my previous PSU.
It didn't seem to be getting worse and everything worked just fine, but it drove me nuts.
Long story short I had to replace it evtl., but I was trying to figure out what was going on before that:
  • definitely the PSU
  • definitely not the PSU fan
  • sound goes away when machine under load
  • tried to cover the coils inside the PSU with hotsnot to no avail
  • almost impossible to locate the source inside the PSU.
I had to build myself a hearing funnel, and became confident that it wasn't the coils, likely capacitors (look up capacitor squeal)

Maybe important to add: this PSU of mine did not always make that sound.

I think you should return yours immediately if possible.

I am completely unfamiliar with that manufacturer. Around here, most builders tend to go with Seasonic which is widely regarded as the best. They're a little pricey but as of late the prices have come down on psus. I've learned the hard way not to cheap out on a psu. If it's within your budget, return your psu and get a Seasonic.

Funny you'd mention Seasonic since one of theirs is the PSU I'm planning to buy next. Waiting for my money back on this one after I ultimately RMA'd it due to the noise.

Noisy power supplies?

It's a design issue. They have it with a variable frequency. So use a 5 Amp supply on 1 Amp, and it's noisy. Use it on more current, and it's still noisy but the frequency goes up, so you don't hear it.
