New Printer Suggestions

It's about time to replace my HP 520 DeskJet, running with Slack 14. All I need is monochrome printing, mostly text, no photos. I know there's an HCL, but most of the reviews are a bit old. I'm an agnostic on inkjet vs laser. I'm willing to pay up to $250, but cheaper is OK too. I want a linux version of plug-and-play if possible, but I'm fine with d/l-ing and installing a driver if I must.

Ideas?

I'm a big fan of Brother printers, they tend to be very linux friendly. I have a (laser) HL-2070N (cups already had a driver that worked) and one of their (inkjet) fax/scanner/copier/printer MFC-J470DW (had to download a driver for this). I've had the laser for 4 or 5 years with no problems, picked up the other one last year. Both cost less then $100 at the time I picked them up.

My advice would be to go with a manufacturer that is committed to providing good Linux support. If you vote with your wallet then you send a clear signal. This restricts to HP and Brother. Epson and Lexmark are both a maybe. Canon requires a middle finger salute.

On Slackware 14.0, you have hplip which makes installing HP devices easy. For Brother devices, installation requires some work. http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:har...r_installation

I also like Brother printers. The HL-2270DW monochrome laser has duplex capability, wireless and reasonably priced.

I would second this recommendation. Great printer, works well with Slackware and other Linux, for me.

Thanks, everyone. The hplip feature certainly makes an HP sound attractive. I had been thinking of a USB connection, but I had hoped it was just a matter of 'modprobe <module_name>' for a 32-bit sys. Now I'm not so sure, after reading that HowTo.

Thanks again
