New mouse, new issue...

2.4.19 kernel, XFree 4.2.0, Slack 8.0, KDE 2.2.2

Just got a new MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 (the one with the two extra buttons on the left side, instead of one on each side). I have it connected via USB. The NHF at linuxnewbie worked for my old, 7 button Kensington mice, but I can't get X to see buttons 6 and 7 with my new rodent. Xev shows no activity from these buttons when using the ExplorerPS/2 protocol, and when using the IMPS/2 protocol, it sees the extra buttons as an extra set of buttons 2 and 3. The fact that one protocol at least registers events from these buttons gives me hope, but I need a little help here.

Anyone else encounter this problem or have any suggestions? Thanks in advance. I hate going back to Windows just to play TFC, but I use these two buttons for handy grenade tossing.

Solved -- too embarrassed to say what was wrong

It was really dumb, believe me.
