New motherboard - some distros have no usb, others OK

Hi, I have a new motherboard, a Gigabyte 970A-D3, "Ultra Durable", Rev 3.0. I want to get Ubuntu working on it, but so far, usb and networking don't work.

I've tried booting four different distros from live CDs to test. Here are the results:

==============================================
Knoppix 7.03: Kernel 3.4.4 #14 SMP PREEMPT. USB and networking work ok.

MarBSD 5.2: Kernel openBSD livecd.my.domain 5.2 GENERIC.MP#368 amd64. USB and networking work ok.

Xubuntu 12.10. Kernel 3.5.0.17-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP x86-64. USB and networking DO NOT WORK.

System Rescue CD 3.1.1. Kernel 3.2.33-std311-amd64. USB and networking DO NOT WORK.
==============================================
So presumably the hardware is all right since it works with two of the four distros.

Also note that one of the failing distros kernel is newer than one of the succeeding ones.

Networking (wired ethernet) and USB are both built into the motherboard. Tested with two known-good USB devices in several ports, and a known-good network cable.

Can someone advise me on what is going on? Why does ubuntu fail and how can I get it to work?

I used to have a previous Revision of the motherboard with a different bios that worked with ubuntu. The new bios has UEFI and other new stuff, could that be somehow related? Maybe I need to change something in the bios, but I would have no idea what.

Or is it that the system's interrupts are somehow interfering with each other? But why for ubuntu but not old Knoppix?

Here are some of the messages I get from the logs with the failing distros:

Trying to connect a usb device:

Code:

Many NetworkManager errors. Normally it just connects to my network with DHCP:

Have you tried stopping network manager and try to configure manually?

Code:
sudo service network-manager stop
sudo dhclient -d eth0
What hardware do you have?

Code:
lspci
What is the output of 'dmesg' right after startup?
Mind you, live cds do not contain all drivers and/or firmware.

I seems the net card is working, but for some reason fails to get a dhcp address.
To see if the card is indeed working, you should configure a working ip address by hand (again, make sure network manager is NOT running:

Code:
sudo ifconfig eth0 $ipaddress
sudo ip rou add default via $gatewayaddress
sudo cat "nameserver 8.8.8.8" > /etc/resolv.conf
$ipaddress = an ip address, it realllly depends on what setup you got there on the router. Also, it must be out of the dhcp range.
$gatewayaddress = the lan ip address of the router
For example, you have a router with 192.168.1.1 address and a dhcp range of 192.168.1.50-192.168.1.254:

Code:
sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.10
sudo ip rou add default via 192.168.1.1
sudo cat "nameserver 8.8.8.8" > /etc/resolv.conf
There is no easy way out, you have to know your network setup for this. You can use the live cd that works to get an ip and then see the network details:

Code:
/sbin/ifconfig
ip rou

Set up the networking manually as you suggested. Networking still doesn't work (and of course USB doesn't either). Can't ping anything on the local network.

I configured ifconfig and routing with IPs just as knoppix does automatically. Knoppix works, xubunutu still does not.

It feels to me like this is a kernel/modules level problem, not just one of configuring the network.

Ubuntu seems to have issues with this:

I put in an old ethernet card (a VIA VT6105/VT6106S [Rhine-II]) and tried again.

In Knoppix, as before, it boots and networking and USB both work fine. The new card works as well as the built-in ethernet (the r8169).

In Xubuntu 12.10, as before, networking and USB both DO NOT work. The new card isn't working same as the built-in ethernet. Same as before, the new card is listed in ifconfig, it just doesn't work.

Ok - this might help to narrow it down. I noticed that knoppix is 32 bit, so I downloaded the 32 bit version of xubuntu -- and it does work.

So:

xubuntu 12.10, 64 bit: USB and Networking don't work
xubuntu 12.10, 32 bit: USB and Networking DO work

To add to that, I also downloaded the 32 bit version of fedora, and it does work.

So its starting to look like a problem with 64-bit linux kernels. The identical 32-bit ones work.

Hi,

Since you say Knoppix is working then I would use Knoppix to identify the modules and firmware necessary to get things working on the other Gnu/Linux.

I just noticed that i have the same net adapter. Works fine under Debian Wheezy with the 3.2, 3.6 and 3.7 32 bit kernels.

The issue isn't Knoppix v Ubuntu, but 32-bit vs 64-bit kernels.

See these two threads for more info:

Summary - 64-bit Linux Kernels don't have USB and Networking with this board and similar boards with the default bios settings. I got mine working by setting IOMMU to ENABLED in the bios.

The net adapter wasn't the problem, I added a pci ethernet card and got the same results. It was the motherboard, specifically that its default bios settings don't work with Linux 64-bit kernels (no networking or usb). See the other threads I mentioned above.

I still suggest that you use the working system with Knoppix or whatever working Gnu/Linux to find out what modules & firmware are being used for the working system, be it 32/64 kernel. You should then be able to use that info to hopefully get a non-working system up. No matter for 32 or 64 you should get an idea what to use for the device(s);

From http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/knoppix705-en.html

Optional 64-bit Kernel via boot option "knoppix64", supporting systems with more than 4GB of RAM and chroot to 64-bit installations for system rescue tasks (DVD version only).
You should be able to perform the tasks. There are many Gnu/Linux that support 32 bit or 64 bit. Just a matter to see if the board is fully supported. New system boards may take some rime to get up to speed with a desired Gnu/Linux. Might require more effort to get something going/working with a newer motherboard. Good luck!

onebuck, I appreciate that you want to try to help, but you should really read the thread before replying. I just mentioned that I had already gotten the board working with the 64-bit kernel by changing the bios settings. As I also said, the distro (knoppix vs ubuntu) is irrelevant. The board works with 32-bit Linux with its default settings, and not with 64-bit Linux.

Please read the two threads I mentioned above if you want the details.
