Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

new motherboard, old drive?

I want to upgrade my system but keep the old drive. Most new motherboards have ata 133/100/66. My drive is a Seagate 8.4 gig ultra ata, it's about 8 years old. I think it runs as dma 33. Will the old drive work with the new board?? What do I need to know to figure this out? New drives are cheap but I want to get the data off of this drive before adding another drive.
Thanks,
reddog

Why couldent you just copy the data from the old drive to the new one?

re:

That's what I want to do eventually but wasn't sure if the old drive would work with the new ATA 133/100controllers on the new boards. I guess it will tho.My old system died on me.
Cool, you're using Xfce!! I was thinking of getting rid of Gnome and going lite as in the old days.(Slackware 3.0,96 and Suse 6.0) But I've gotten used to the Gnome games in RH9.0. And there are some nice utilities with the Gnome panel like mounting zip, floppy etc. The distros don't give you much choice, just twm. Couldn't run KDE on my old system. Not enough memory I guess. I've got 256Mb tho. Where's the desktop going? Bigger and bigger. Now they say you need 512Mb to run them!! Unbelievable.
take it easy,
