Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

new Linux Box

I am needing a new Linux box I am currently using an amd 700 mghz cpu and two harddrives one for win xp and one for suse 9.2. I would like advice as to what mother board and cpu I should get for my new box. I have condidered a 64 bit mother board but not sure if i need this type of hardware or if I will benifit from it. At the present I do not do much with graphics, video, or music editing simply because my system is to slow, and cannot handle the applications needed. So I use my system for simple word processing, Internet searches, email and using my scanner as a copy machine. I do have another great scanner and a great dvd burner but they are sitting in boxes unused because my system can not handle them. Please advise.

First of all, consider the Linux HCL, found on this site in the Main Menu, to your right and up I don't know how much is benefited by using a 64 bit processors if you only use it for word processing and office stuff. However the times are changing and you will soon need a processor like this for common use, so it could be useful to have in a couple of years. If you are buying now and money is not the first issue, go for it. Review the HCL(hardware compatibility list) to see what hardware linux can handle and make it work for you.

Good luck!

My recebt upgrade

Just to help, I have just upgraded to an Asrock P4VT8+ mb with a Celeron 2.66 and 512MB.

The rest of the system is 2x40GB HDDs,CD writer and DVD ROM. sound card and GForce FX5200. (from previous system)

Works well, runs Doom3 at "Medium Quality" and GLXgears Full Screen at 290fps.

If you're serious about gaming get a better graphics card. The FX5200 is over a year old.
