New LG SuperMulti CD/DVD/Writer not recognizing Linux-Ubuntu
Greetings,
I bought a new LG SuperMulti cd/dvd/rw. It came with a garden variety drive install disk for Windows. I threw that in the garbage and began a online and Ubuntu/ LG software driver search. This amounted to heresy since all I could find was "does'nt work for sh%t with Linux" and " no drivers found for this product". Strange thing when I put in a music cd it plays fine. When I pop in a dvd an icon appears on the desktop as if to prompt me to play it. When I double click or right click<open> it only shows files and when I go to run one of them a pop-up box say it does not recognize resource. I downloaded VLC tried, used Ubuntu default Mplayer but no good either. Tried AutoRun Prompt and even opening movie with Avidemux. Any lead or help wold be appreciated. |
...and I dual booted into Windows XP and the dvd and writer worked perfectly. Still not working in Linux-Ubuntu Lucid

You dont need drivers for optical drives. Your problem is playing a dvd, google the ubuntu forums for a solution.

Con is right. I have several LG Super multi drives. They all work perfectly. You are probably missing packages for reading DVDs. libdvdcss comes to mind, along with what Ubuntu calls "non free" packages. Here is a forum that covers all the bases concerning multimedia: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683

Thanks to con @ purevw
I went to the link provided by purevw and did a terminal box download for the missing packages. It's a great information bundle for people new to Ubuntu. I highly recommend it! Mplayer, Avidemux and VLC media player are all up and running. There are also some extra hints and tips for other programs. I hope the people with similar difficulties find this thread to their advantage. |
