New LAN card, new hard hang
I have been fighting with numerous problems with NFS, Seti@Home, ...
Out of the blue I tried a ping from another machine on my local network.... Not good. On various tries I get from 76% to 23% *lost* packets (never 100% good!!), _on a local network_.
The LAN card I was using, an AMDTek ALG-2 (AN983B) is the same brand/model as others I've had *serious* problems with in the past, so RIIIIP... out it comes and I replace it with a RealTek 8139 (I keep a case of these around for just this reason...)
Linux boots (RH 8.0 btw) and Kudzu comes up, asks about removing old LAN card, asks about installing new LAN card, asks about migrating network configuration, ... IMPRESSIVE!
BUT.... Now after it comes up I enter my login name and password then Gnome just hangs, before displaying any of the icons across the bottom of the logo screen like it used to. A reboot results in the same...
Any ideas???
