Hello everyone. Im trying to update my kernel (version 2.4.x) to version 2.6.8.1. I was suprised to find that the drivers for my other IDE controller were available in the kernel compilation options, so I selected them. Once everything was compiled and installed, I rebooted and watched the system messages scroll by. I noticed that my linux disk was now identifyed as hdi, rather then hde. The kernel died when it tryed to read files off of hde, with a VFS panic. I managed to solve this by booting into my old kernel, and putting in 'append="boot=/dev/hdi root=/dev/hdi6"' into my lilo.conf.
The next time I booted, fsck complained it couldnt find hde partitions, I expected this. It gave me the option to skip scanning, and I did. A few messages later, the system hung on "starting kernel log daemon: syslogd".
Help! I have no idea what to do
Should I mod my /etc/fstabs to point to /dev/hdi instead of /dev/hde? If so, what will happen when I try booting into the old kernel?
Thanks in advance.
