It does work now and again and I am not sure why, more often with the Gnome desktop than the kde, and never in text mode. I am still relatively new to linux but would really like to make this the perfect install. It is the only OS on the machine.

Is the 'gpm' daemon (mouse server for virtual consoles) running? If it is, do you have /dev/input/mice device? And /etc/sysconfig/mouse? Does /var/log/messages show anything mice-related messages?
I will get back to you after having run those and making some sense of it all. Today it is working, as is my wireless keyboard for the first time. Thanks for giving me a starting point.
Ok, on the first yes, there is a /dev/input/mice, but no /etc/sysconfig/mouse, and even though I was in root - to /var/log/messages it said permission denied.Might it have anything to do with not being able to complete Xorg -configure - a potpourri of error messages I am trying to weed through.

Shouldn't matter much as gpm usually gets things right. From the command line, as root, try 'gpm -m /dev/input/mice -t ps2 -D -V'.

Not sure what you're saying here. If you can't 'less /var/log/messages' as root then post output of 'stat /var/log/messages'.

X11 / Xorg logs output in /var/log/Xorg.${DISPLAY}.log (where DISPLAY is 0 unless you have multiple monitors connected) so 'egrep -i "(ww|ee)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log' should show any logged errors (though that says nothing about severity) or else view the file using 'less /var/log/Xorg.0.log'. If you've had more install-time or other errors than the one you just listed now would be a good time to tell.
This is what it printed out, I really appreciate the help, this installation has really been a lot of work for a newbie and all I wanted was somewthing more plug and play for my new wacom tablet and get back to animating, but right now the machine is just not up to doing anything of the sort.

I don have a mac mouse is that perhaps how it interpreted the wacom tablet?
upgraded to Centos 6.3 and PS2 mouse still does not start
I was able to use the PS2 mouse about 50% of the time eventually although I don't know why. Then I upgraded to Centos 6.3 and my Logitech trackman hasn't worked since (PS2) the keyboard (which it came with originally) works just fine.
