New H.D. as slave

The master is a WD 400EB ultra ata/100 and the slave I can get installed is a seagate ultra ata/100.I have a dvd/cdrw that is secondary master. The cable is blue, gray, and black.I tried setting the jumpers to cable select and both drives were not detected.I tried setting as master and slave and again both drives were not detected. The WD when it is working alone is set to single(neutral position)from the factory. This is a gateway 310.I tried to install the seagate by itself and it was not detected.this has nothing to do with LINUX I'm just running out of room so I thought this would be easy.Either the H.D. is no good(slim)or I don't have something set correctly(my money)thanks david

"Either the H.D. is no good(slim)or I don't have something set correctly"

Do you have a cable problem? The Seagate requires a 80 wire/40 pin cable and the DVD/CD-RW may require a 40 wire/40 pin cable.

Yes. You could also try the Seagate as secondary master and the DVD/CDRW as secondary slave.

Another thing that you could try is the Seagate as secondary master with no secondary slave attached.

You should Google on the exact model number to see if this model was on sale because it is a lemon.

Seems to be a OK drive just out of production, must be a older model as there were some refurbished for sale as well and not that cheap. Why would it not work alone, that has me concerned that there may be something wrong with this drive, but it is new with nothing on it.Bios should see it though right? And why with it connected with the WD no drive is detected

Have you checked those jumpers? I bought a Western Digital drive and when it is alone it wants NO jumpers at all. It wants the Master jumper only when there is another drive on that controller as Slave. That had me for a while till someone pointed out that fact to me. I was used to Maxtor and they don't care.

Just a thought.

Later
