New GPU, no X (slack 13.37 / AMD HD 6800 Series)

Hey,
As the title suggests, after mounting a new graphics card into my tower X won't start.
I'm using Slackware 13.37 (32-bit) and the GPU is
6870 AMD Radeon HD EAH6870/2DI2S/1GD5
So far I tried upgrading mesa and librdm (both successfully via the slack cd)

but I still can't get in.
The error messages can be summarised as follows:

"Failed to load module "fbdev""
"Radeon HD 6800 series (chipset 0x6838) requires KMS"
"Screens were found but none have a usable configuration"

Upgrading to the new libdrm/Mesa and the newer kernel from /testing worked for my HD6870. You also can use the proprietary driver or just upgrade to -current, both works.
