I'm building a new desktop system, it has to be fully linux compatible.
I had this in mind:
-A dual core amd processor
-A simple passive cooled Nvidia graphics adapter
-2 disks in raid 0 array with a hardware raid controller
-A dvd burner
-1 gig of ram (has to be expandable)
Is the processor speed controlled by the os or by hardware? If it is, is it possible to clock the processor to a lower speed (when the pc is idle) with linux?
Which motherboard is a good choice?
And which components can give problems with linux?
My friend has a Asus A8n-SLI but any ASUS/ABIT should work. I have a Athlon 64 3400 and a abit kv-80 with a VIA k8m800 and 8237 southbridge but there is no onboard video acceleration/3D. But if you have an NVIDIA card that doesn't matter.
I have looked on the amd website for recommend motherboards.
Most motherboards have nvidia nforce4, nforce4 sli, nforce4 ultra or via k8t890, k8t800 pro, k8t8 chipsets, 1 mobo has a nforce3 chipset.
I'm running a AMD64 X2 4400+ on a DFI Lanparty NF4-SLI DR and everything is pretty swell. My only hang up would be the RAID-0, why do you want that? If speed is so vitally crucial grab a Raptor disk that come close to 2 average SATA disks in a RAID-0 with a much higher level of data security.
Does it make any sense which dvd burner you buy?
And via chipsets? Do they give problems or are they working perfect?
And do all features of the nforce4 chipset work under linux?
