new CD-RW drive - Mt Ranier or not ?

I am buying a new RW drive for my new box. I thought I read that linux supports mt ranier and the windoze does not yet.

since I don't really like using RW discs (hate the long formats, and the format errors I get alot). I also don't like the "packet writing" software that comes with windoze CD burning apps.

I was wondering what exactly mt ranier does, ie: does it make using RWs more like floppies? "drag & drop" easy saving files I mean.

I am asking cuz I will buy a mt ranier drive (for example Yamaha Lightspeed 3) if it does really work in linux. If not, I'll just get a non-mt ranier Plextor or TDK drive.

I will be using Mandrake 9.0. (dual-boot option with win98SE)

Thanks

My understanding it is packet writing aka DirectCD or UDF via hardware not software. Don't know if support is included in the MDK 9.0 kernels. If not you can get the patch.

ok, but question is:

if I right-click on a file, and then drag & drop it over on the RW drive (with a new RW disc in it), will it be saved? Will an "on-the-fly" format take place, or what...?

sorry, if I'm talking in terms of windoze explorer, I've been using windoze so long... hopefully not much longer though.

I've been waiting for RWs to get easier to work with. Just was wondering if this mt ranier is gonna make 'em more like saving to floppies.

Like I said before, I don't like the InCD (nero's) or DirectCD (Roxio's) packet-writing software.

Turns out I was searching on the wrong thing - "ranier". Correct spellling is "rainier". Found this at mt-rainier.org:

Isn't it already possible to drag and drop data to CD-RW?
Yes, packet writing applications are currently available that enable CD-RW drag and drop capability in most major operating systems. What the Mount Rainier initiative changes is that the functionality will be seamlessly integrated in the operating systems and the user will be able to write immediately to a new disc without waiting for formatting.

Will this make the packet writing applications obsolete?
Once this is fully implemented in the OS, packet writing applications will not be needed to write on Mount Rainier enabled CD-RW drives.

also found this at theregister.co.uk (an article dated 2/11/01):

Linux wins access to next-generation CDs

Updated: After months of closed-door negotiations, open source developers are now sure of royalty-free access to one of the most significant new storage formats of the future: Mount Rainier.

(the article goes on about how great & wonderful mount rainier will make RW drives. Can the ariticle really be almost 2 years old

I'm just now realizing that this question is pointless.

My new box being assembled has an Asus A7V333 mobo (with the KT333 chipset). I have just been reading all the posts about linux not working with this.

Guess it may be a couple more years on windoze. Who wants to use an OS that doesn't work with any new hardware?

why wouldn't linux work with your new hardware? there's nothing special about that mobo. the kernel developers are working on mt. rainier support, when it will be stable/usable is anyones guess.

sorry for my grouchiness before, I've got computers & components spread out all over my office and I'm trying to figure out what to do.

Today I ended up buying win2000 (OEM) for $150 (sorry). Hopefully it will be the last I ever buy. And bought a TDK 48/16/48 CD burner (non-mount rainier) since no one seems to know anything about Mount Rainier. Even though I've read a few articles about mount rainier in the last year or so about it being the biggest thing ever for CD-RW drives. Guess not.

Regarding the A7V333 Asus mobo (KT333 chipset) I was just commenting on all the posts I've read about linux not working with that new chipset. I think the posts were over on the mandrake boards. I hope the posts are not true and that you are right rshaw.

PS: rshaw - I signed the DMCA petition from your link, hopefully everyone else will too.
