Networking over Thunderbolt. Ethernet device missing.

I have two Intel NUCs (NUC10i7FNH).

I'm trying to do set up a network over thunderbolt between them for the purpose of implementing DRBD and keep the replication traffic off network they are attached to.

Running an up to date Debian Testing.

The thunderbolt device is recognized:

Code:

3b:00.0 SD Host controller: Genesys Logic, Inc Device 9755
And, I've followed the instructions here: https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/late...underbolt.html, including modprobe thunderbolt-net (actually, I did that on both hosts).

However I don't get a network interface to configure. Nothing is printed out in the logs or dmesg.

I did read a stack overflow post or something where by a guy had to boot into Windows and configure the thunderbolt device not to sleep, then it worked in Linux. I haven't tried that. These machines don't have Windows installed.

Aside from installing Windows, I'm lost on what to do next. Can any one help?

EDIT:

Code:
tbtadm devices
produces no output.

Hi ComputerUser, & welcome to LQ.

I'd imagine an autosleep would hardly be enabled from initialization. Have you thought of exploring
  • Module options?
  • BIOS Options
  • Setting a ping or dhcp going in the init scripts as a last resort

The module probably is the best way to go about this, even if it means getting on the LKML and filing a kernel bug. It's bound to be a known issue. I just don't know it.

I think I may have figured it out. As per usual, the problem is sitting in front of the computer, and I assumed what I now know to be an "Apple Charge Cable" was a thunderbolt cable. I'll find out in a day or so once the ordered certified thunderbolt 3 cable turns up.
