Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

network storage recommendations

Hi,

I am looking for a backup solution for a few machines on my network. I'm considering an arrayed solution such as the Lacie fw800

http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10850

the only problem with this is that it is usb only when ideally I need NAS.
Could anybody recommend any hardware that will store at least 1TB that they know is decent?

ps i'm probably going to use backup2l (http://backup2l.sourceforge.net)

thanks

You're probably better off just building your own machine with a BOD (Bunch of Disks) instead of going with this Lacie you mentioned or anything similiar that uses USB which will be slower than my grandma on her good days.

Buy a microATX motherboard, use an AMD Sempron, and Hitachi's 1 TB hard drive. One problem, Hitachi's 1 TB hard drive will be out in a few weeks to a month, so you have to wait. The estimate price of the 1 TB hard drive will be $400.

The Lacie unit is for both USB and IEEE-1394 (aka Firewire). You can hook it up to any computer that has either one of these connections and setup SNFS or SAMBA.

I use MediaMax (aka Streamload) for off-site backups.
