Network printers installation

Hi everyone. I'm having trouble installing a network printer on my Debian system.

I read several threads and guides but they are not very clear and I think that none of them reflects my specific situation.

I have my Linux PC connected to a WIFI network. Then I connect to the VPN of my working place in order to get access to shared hardrives.

Network printers I want to connect to are in a server inside the network of my working place.

If I go to printers/add printers (through the GUI) and in the network address i type smb:/IES-DEF/138.4.46.239 (where IES-DEF is the domain and 138.4.46.239 the server IP address of the printers) the three available printers appear.

If I select one it asks me to choose makers and model. Here problems begin. For some of the printers there's not a coincidence and there's no way to "import" externally downloaded drivers. For one of them there is the right model but one selected it say "Failed to add new printer" without giving any error message or code.

In windows the printers work just fine. To install them in a windows machine I followed the attached guide provided by our system administrator. He doesn't know how to do it with a linux computer.

Any advice?

I tried also to do it with cups opening in the web browser (http://localhost:631/admin) but no success.

Thanks in advance.

Has it got a specific IP? You might benefit from post #10 on this

Hi thanks for your answer.

I asked the IT guy and each printer has its own IP address. Then the three of them are installed in a PC with another IP and usually (with windows) you can install and configure the printers just mounting the "tmp" folder present in the PC.

I read post #10 of the threads, first it is quite complicated for me to understand (I'm quite a newby), second, for what I understood, require to have direct access to the modem (I don't have it since I'm connected to my job's network).

However I know the IP of the printers I want to install, should I just try the command:

Code:
sudo hp-setup <printer_ip>
Over the three printers two of them are HPs, the third one is Toshiba. Is there a similar command for Toshiba's printers?

Thanks again for the help

hp-setup is part of the hplip package, for HP printers, which everyone swears by, and I swear AT :-).

That aside, my printer was a HP, and getting an IP on it was the struggle. You seem to have that. So try localhost:631 /Admini9stration / Add Printer, give it root and the appropriate password, and set up a network printer with your known IP. You probably won't need hplip at all.

I have a cheap HP laser mono. I do little printing and laser toner cartridges last better than inkjet refills in that environment. I get several years out of a toner cartridge. It rots as fast as it runs out :-).
