Network issue with Redhat

I'm a newbie with Linux. I installed Redhat Linux Enterprise Workstation on my desktop. The installation went OK except that I can't get an IP address on my Ethernet card from the DHCP server (Netgear router). I manually put in an IP address on the Ethernet card and it accepted the address.

My problem is I can ping the IP address of the localhost but I can't ping any other machines. I have a Windows XP laptop on the same subnet.

I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this. I have an embedded Ethernet controller, the VIA Rhine II.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

go into the network configuration and set the ip address to be picked up from dhcp. in redhat, the command-line might be redhat-config-network. Or, access via System Settings --> Network.

Also have to make sure that your firewall doesn't block dhcp.

You can manually trigger DHCP address release and renew from the command-line with the 'dhclient' utility, but it's worth checking the cable first and then the setup on the router, as those are the most common issues.

If you haven't, it's also a good idea to make sure that your router is running the latest firmware, as manufacturers will always release new versions after the product has been on the market a while and bugs have been found.
