Network driver problem with Asus P5LD2-VM (SUSE 10)

I am very grateful if someone could help me with my problem.

How an earth am I able to make my network connection work in my SUSE Linux 10.0? I tried to install drivers located in the CD-ROM, but I just couldn't make it.

So here is what have I done:

1) I unzipped the driver (e1000-6.1.16.tar.gz) to /root
2) then: make install (/root/e1000-6.1.16/src)
3) then I changed directory to /usr/src/linux-2.6.13-15/drivers/net/e1000 and tried to install a module: insmod e1000 (<-- does this require any parameters?) - returning an error: insmod: can't read 'e1000': No such file or directory

Tell me what am I doing wrong? I am quite noob in working with kernel development and I don't quite much understand about programmin.

I am confused! e1000 is part of the SUSE kernel (actually, I am running this driver right now, meaning there is no need to compile this driver). Are you sure it's the driver and not some other problem? What's your hardware (chipset)?

EDIT (more info):

What's the output of lsmod (is e1000 listed)?
Did you try network configuration with YaST?
Try modprobe instead of insmod (although I think it's useless).

Did you do an install of EVERYTHING in the SUSE disto? If not, try that & the kernel might just find everything it's supposed to on the ASUS MB. I've had that experience with the FC4 distro.

Actually installation was quite default. What comes to additional packages, I only installed C/C++ compiler and tools and Kernel Development. I suppose I have to install the system again because of some weird misconfiguration in my LAN-adapter.. When I enable NIC by YasT and reboot --> it hangs to login screen, no response.

When I'm enabling NIC by YasT, it says something like driver is not in kernel but it could be a module..

Reason why I am working with kernel and trying to install newest drivers in it, is that I wish to create a bootable CD for my companys' ZENworks imaging engine. ZENworks 6.5 SP-2 does not have support for NIC that this Asus P5LD2-VM uses.

It isn't easy at all I know it, but I would like to try before giving up!
