network card or mainboard frustration

I'm running mint 6 and its great. I can download, stream just about anything. That is anything that doesn't saturate my internet conection. When i'm downloading at peak speed, the mouse chugs around the desktop and the desktop is frozen, as well as running aplications. sometimes its just the desktop that is frozen and the mouse runs fine.
I've noticed this in windows as well as ubuntu hardy and linux mint 6.
My network connection is onboard, and I'm wondering if I should buy a new/used network pci card, or if my mainboard is toast.

Difficult to know for sure without knowing the mobo and nic chipset in question.
However - sounds ike irq conflicts - try booting wih irqpoll on the kernel line. Could be borked BIOS - flash it to the latest, and go through the CMOS switching off special features.

I checked in the cmos and irq are shared between usb, network, and something else I can't remember at the moment.. I was worried to change irq for existing hardware, so that I can change the irq thats shared for my network card.

I'm going to have to wait to flash the bios since I don't have the media to put it on.

I'm not sure where to put irqpoll, but I will search the net for it.

I'll let you know what happens.

Ahh ye olde Broadcom NetExtreme II.. so I imagine you are running the bnx2 driver ?
I have those NIC's in one of my HP servers and don't have any issues with them.

you really shouldn't be having troubles with that NIC..

could you post the output of modinfo bnx2

That NIC does have proprietary firmware, which is included in the kernel module for older kernels.. Debian has split the firmware from the driver module starting with 2.6.24, and putting the firmware in a seperate package. I don't know if any other distros are pulling binary firmware out of the kernel or not.. (I agree with Debian, Firmware doesn't belong there in the first place)

Hmm theres certainly been a lot of recent patches to this driver. don't know if that's good or bad, or if any of those would be related to your issue...

http://marc.info/?a=108541984900005&r=1&w=2

he is up to driver version 1.90 but I can't locate the source anywhere..

would you suggest that I just buy a new network card?

That NIC is popular enough that you shouldn't really be having that many issues.. Like I mentioned before, I have that same Integrated NIC in one of my servers and it works flawlessly, but of course that system is running Debian Stable, and that distro is nothing if not tested thoroughly to ensure everything works properly and is stable.

If it's really giving you that much grief and you can't find an updated driver/kernel to solve the issue, then a replacement NIC would be an option. But then I would recommend something from intel, a e1000 card perhaps. I shy away from cheap and no-name components, and you KNOW an intel card will work.
