network card not present

when I boot my acer aspire notebook, it tells me that eth0 does not seem to be present, dmesg tells me that the driver contains an unknown symbol 'irq'. do I need to recompile the module, or just add a kernel boot parameter? the module in question is sis900

I have tried both acpi=noirq and pci=noacpi, independently and together, same result.

According to a person writing in the HCL section of this site, the driver for the network card may stop working after a kernel upgrade. However, you didn't indicate which Acer Aspire you own, so that may be for a different model.

the model is 3004. I have realized that the kernel source I have will not buuld, so I am going to get a fresh copy.

I figured out the problem after many kernel builds: the kernel is innocent, for some reason there was a line in modprobe.conf that stated "option sis900 irq=3". when I removed this, it worked fine.
